Last Blog Post

This past Thursday I went to an on  campus event. It was my first one this year and it was not bad. Sage The Gemini performed and it was really fun. The first part of the concert was not that great because it was artists I had never heard of but I guess you have to start somewhere. It was really crowded and there was a couple of fights in the crowd because people were pushing to try and get up to the front. After the concert I got to meet Sage The Gemini and took a picture with him. You never know what could happen at these on campus events so try to give at least one of them a try and you never know you might have fun.

Nuclear Waste

In this chapter in They Say I Say called Nuclear Waste, Richard A. Muller talks about the plan to store nuclear waste. There is already a plan to store nuclear waste in the Yucca mountains but Muller says we already have more nuclear waste than that spot could fit. He says he does not know why people think it is dangerous to store the nuclear waste there. He explains that it is more dangerous to leave the waste untouched because we could most of our Nuclear power from the Colorado area and that can leak into the water supply in the Colorado River. This is pretty crazy stuff because for 100,000 years nuclear waste is still toxic. He points out that 10,000 years ago humans had barley discovered agriculture. We do not know what the future holds so how can we plan that far ahead. Whatever ends up happening I just hope they make the right decision this nuclear waste is no joke.

Draft day

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2416071-marcus-mariota-reportedly-doesnt-plan-to-attend-2015-nfl-draft

Marcus Mariota and Jameis Winston both plan on not attending the draft. One of these quarter backs is going to be the first over all pick. It is a big day I have never seen someone in the first round of the draft not be there for it. It is cool that these two have decided they would rather be with their family than be there at the draft. Jameis Winston will most likely be the number one over all pick because all of the ESPN reporters are saying he most likely will and they are usually right but you never know. Both quarterbacks have different playing styles and both are very talented. I feel like Jameis would be a better fit for the Tampa Bay Bucs. I cannot wait to see this draft it is very exciting to see who is going to the pros next year.

Research Article

http://www.menshealth.com/nutrition/creatine-q

This article is good research for my potential question I want to research. My question is are dietary supplements good or bad for you. Many people say that Creatine is bad for you and others say it is not. I am currently debating on whether or not to take it. This article has many facts and myth busters in it about the product. It explains to you what creatine is and the myths and facts about it. If you are into weight lifting or working out and take dietary supplements I would recommend you to read this article. If anyone has any knowledge on this product let me know.

Turkle

This article is a podcast that is also written down so you can read it or listen to it. The video is made by Sherry Turkle and she talks about how in 1996 she gave a talk about how important technology was. Now she has changed her mind. She said that people are becoming less social and more reliant on social media and technology. Turkle is a psychologist and studies the affects technology has on people. She gives many examples like a guy at work who would rather be on his blackberry than talk to coworkers. How people go on social media no matter where they are funerals, work, meetings, being with family members. People are taking their focus off of conversations because with technology you are able to control, edit, and hide who you really are. I agree with Turkle when texting you can control and think about what you are going to say, when you are having a conversation once you say something you cannot edit or delete what you just said. Technology is become a problem and I also see it everyday. I can never really get anyone's full attention because everyone is always on their phones. My parents or siblings and friends talk to me but ignore stuff I say because they are busy texting or checking social media. I myself in class sometimes bring out my phone sometimes I get urges when I do not check my phone for a while. This is becoming a problem we all need to work on before we all become social robots.

The End of the San Francisco 49ers

If you are wondering why I hate the 49ers so much it mainly has to do with the area I was born in. Where I am from you are either an Oakland Raider fan or a San Francisco 49er fan. You have no idea how much of a rivalry this is. Location wise of course because in the NFL they are not really rivals. When the 49ers were good my whole family would bag on the Raiders my favorite team. Those consecutive years the 49ers were in the play offs I sat there silently hearing my whole family say things like "what time do the Raiders play" or posting instagram pictures bagging on the Raiders. Well now this 49er team is just crumbling down, I was the happiest kid in the world last year when the Raiders beat the 49ers in the Battle of The Bay. Now the 49ers lost their head coach Jim Harbaugh, their line backer Patrick Willis, their running back Frank Gore, and most likely lose their star receiver Michael Crabtree. I guarantee next year this team is out of the playsoffs again. On the other hand my favorite team the Oakland Raiders have been making power moves we finally got a got quarterback. Derek Carr from Fresno State had a fantastic rookie season. We also have Khalil Mack the defensive rookie of the year. I am hoping the Raiders draft Kevin White in the 2015 draft, they most likely are. He would be a key receiver for Derek Carr. I miss football and cannot wait for the season to begin.

Ndamukong Suh Free Agency

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/12407255/ndamukong-suh-set-free-agent-detroit-lions-forgo-tag

Ndamukong Suh is a beast defensive tackle for the Detroit lions. Unfortunately his contract has run out and they have yet to make a deal. They decided not to use the Franchise tag on him. The Franchise tag is a contract that allows a team to sign a player for an additional year but they have to pay the person the similar salary as the top players for that position. Each team can only use one franchise tag per year. If the Lions do not make a long term deal quick they will lose him for good. There is many teams interested in him but I do not know if they would like his background. He is known as being a dirty player he has been suspended for playing dirty. On Thanksgiving a while back he slammed Evan Dietrich- Smiths who was on the packers head into the ground and stomped on him. Whats pretty funny is Evan is my high school English teachers son. The following week in class he was all mad calling Suh a poor sport. Suh was also fined for stepping on Aaron Rodgers calf, in total he has 420,669 dollars in fines for hits on players. As long as he cleans up his act he is one of the best defensive players on the free agency market right now.

Why the English Language Amendment? Respoonse

In "Why the English Amendment",  S.I. Hayakawa is a Canadian born, Japanese race senator wanting to make English the official language of the United States. In class we were asked if his claim was convincing I was on the yes side but just because of the assignment I thought it was a well written article. Without taking a position I said yes but with taking a position I believe English should not be the official language of the United States. Hayakawa was born in Canada so he must not see that the United States is built upon cultural diversity. Personally I like diversity I like when there is different languages and different cultures.I do not see why everyone would want to be the same and not speak different languages. You should be proud of who you are and where you come from. I think Hayakawa is a sell out personally with all respect he should have been proud of being Japanese it is in his blood he should focus on both English and learning about his own culture. If you take peoples languages away then you take their identity. Learning English is important yes but do not force it upon people, if you know another language then do not forgot because knowing different languages and being different is a beautiful thing. Be proud of where you came from and never forget your language.

Basketball

I recently started getting into basketball. I used to watch a game here and there but it never really interested me like football. I went to my first NBA game last week I saw the Sacramento Kings vs. the Boston Celtics. It was amazing seeing the game live, so much better than on T.V. The Sacramento Kings won the game with Demarcus Cousins scoring 33 points and Rudy Gay scoring 28 if I remember correctly. After the game me and my friend got lost we forgot where we parked and spent an hour looking for his car so if you ever go to a game try and remember where you park because it is a pain if you do not. Since I started watching basketball I decided to buy the game NBA 2k15 for the xbox 360. It is a really good game if anyone wants to hop on the sticks then let me know.

Ad Beats by Dre

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Ttsx5squWg

The reason I chose this ad is because this ad made me want to buy beats. It made the song "i'm the man" by Aloe Blacc be stuck in my head for the longest time. The claim in this ad is that when you put the headphones on everything else goes away it cancels all background noise out. The purpose of it is to get people to buy the headphones athletes, football players, or people who watch football. The audience is anyone who watches the commercial mainly people who watch football because the star of the commercial is Collin Kaepernick the quarterback of the San Francisco 49ers. This was aired at the time of one of the greatest NFC football championships ever. It was the Seattle Seahawks vs. the San Francisco 49ers, these two are NFC West rivals. The game ended with the Seattle Seahawks winning of course with Richard Shermans swat leading to an interception. Richard Sherman is a corner for the Seahawks you might have heard his rant after winning the game. This was talked about for a really long time Michael Crabtree the receiver you see in the picture told something to Sherman so after the game he called him out saying, "When you try me against the sorriest receiver in the league thats the result you gon get don't you ever talk about me". But anyway this ad was pretty effective since I myself bought headphones. The headphones by the way are really good I use them when I work out or when I want to ignore people, noise really is cancelled and you do really hear what you want. Sometimes I catch myself saying "hear what you want". This ad got me with the music and with my favorite sport football.

The Wedding Ringer

If you love comedies I would recommend seeing this movie. It is about a guy who pretends to be someones best man for money. The rules are the guys cannot try and contact him after. But when he meets a guy that has a lot in common with him he is the one that wants to befriend him. In the movie the guy who is about to get married realizes his wife is only into him for the money. He ends up not marrying her instead of going on a honeymoon with her he takes all of his new friends on a vacation. This movies is hilarious I cracked up the entire time especially when the guy sings if you see the movie you will know what I am talking about.

Against Meat Response

This article by Jonathan Foer was about his story of being a vegetarian. He talked about how his grandma would always save food because she grew up in a time of depression. He also talked about why he chose to raise his kids as vegetarians. It is an interesting article because the stories change out of no where. His reason for being a vegetarian is because his babysitter said "you know you are eating a chicken" it opened his eyes to see that he is eating an animal. The article says that eating meats is the worse thing you can do for the environment. The ending was pretty crazy he talked about some war and how he was starving he was offered a piece of meat but did not eat it because he was against eating meat. I think if I was dying I would have eaten the meat. Its eat or be eaten in this world.

Why not to believe conspiracies

http://youarenotsosmart.com/2010/09/11/the-texas-sharpshooter-fallacy/

If you ever believed a conspiracy then this could possibly change your mind. This is an article I had to read for my critical thinking class that really opened up my eyes. On twitter there is all of these conspiracy accounts that tweet stuff and make you believe it. It is called the Texas Sharpshooter Fallacy. It is called this because it is a metaphor of an imaginary cowboy that shoots at a barn but only focuses on the cluster of holes he makes making people believe he is a very good shooter. This article talks about how everyone is always looking for a meaning in something. Any random thing that is a big coincidence is looked to have happened for a reason. It also says how patterns are everywhere and are formed by chance and could mean nothing. The reason I put this picture is because I saw this on twitter and it talked about how the Titan book that was written before the Titanic happened is a prediction of the sinking of the Titanic. I actually believed that until I read this article it gives you some examples on how there is many differences in the two stories that are ignored. I highly recommend reading this article if you are into conspiracies or just because I am not really much of a reader but it is very interesting.

Is the Internet good or bad for education?

There is two things I would like to point out specifically said in chapter 13 of " They Say, I Say". The first thing is Critics are saying all the information we can access through Google is making us not think clearly about main ideas. People on the other hand are saying without Google and the internet it would be a lot harder to even get this information so quickly. They have also said throughout time students writers have never been able to sustain main ideas in the first place. I would have to agree with the fact that it is always hard to focus on one main idea even if we did not have the internet. The internet actually helps us by giving us many examples and ideas to talk about. The second thing I would like to point out said in this chapter is critics say abbreviations on social media are causing us to not write clearly and making us lose our standard English. I would have to disagree because you have a different language for everywhere you are. You are not going to write formally on social media because you mostly follow your friends so you use your own language. Technology is a good thing and really helps you learn and improve as a writer because you can look up information and examples on writing. Without the internet we would only have what is in our area to learn, with the internet we have the whole world to learn about.

Disrespect

http://thebiglead.com/2015/02/04/legarrette-blount-had-a-bitch-mode-t-shirt-at-the-patriots-parade/
LaGarrette Blount called out Marshawn Lynch after winning the super bowl. But does he really have that right to talk? You cannot call out one of the best running backs in the league like that just because your team won. For starters Marshawn Lynch has over 5000 more career rushing yards than Blount. In the Super Bowl Marshawn Lynch had 102 yards Blount only had 40. Blount has been known for having a big mouth in college. When he was at Oregon he got suspended for almost his entire senior year for punching someone on the opposite team in the face. If you ask me the Patriots are talking to much, you should win the game with respect. The Seahawks played a good game even though most of their secondary were injured. I am not a Seahawks fan I am just commenting on this situation because they shouldn't have disrespected their opponents like that.

My Writing Process

My writing process is always different depending on what I am writing on. The first thing I do is get out a paper and brainstorm a little. I do not like typing it out first, I prefer to write it out. The hardest thing about writing for me is making it longer. Once I am out of ideas it is hard for me to continue the writing. It is also hard for me to edit my own paper. A couple of things I am good are starting a paper, once I get an idea I am good about finishing the paper pretty fast. So the first thing I do is write a draft, after that I type it out usually changing a lot of things. Once I start typing I either change sentences or add things. After I finish typing out the essay I like to read it edit the format and then leave it alone for a while. I like to come back later and read it again checking for mistakes. Once I print it out I read it one last time before I turn it in. Every once in a while when the teacher wants a draft first and then gives back the first one I like to edit it to get as much points possible. I need to work on making my papers longer. When ever it is a 4-5 page essay and I have almost 4 pages it is hard to add once I am already done with the paper. This blog might help by allowing me to practice writing and maybe giving me ideas on papers by looking at other peoples writing.
